Suez Canal Strengthens Its Strategic Edge with Return of Mega Container Ships

The Suez Canal has once again demonstrated its critical role in global shipping by facilitating the transit of two giant CMA CGM container vessels: JULES VERNE and HELIUM, signaling renewed trust and stability in the route.

  • CMA CGM JULES VERNE, with a length of 396 meters and a tonnage of approximately 176,000 tonnes, recently crossed in a southbound convoy after a safe passage through Bab alMandeb.
  • CMA CGM HELIUM completed its maiden southbound passage via the canal, reinforcing the trend of mega-ship returns.

White Pigeon Marine Services views this development as a major positive signal: the Suez Canal Authority, under Admiral Osama Rabie, is not only offering generous incentive schemes but also reinforcing navigational support to accommodate ultra-large vessels.

For shipowners and charterers working with White Pigeon, this trend could open doors to more efficient East–West routing opportunities. With the Suez Canal regaining momentum, the option to route via this shorter and increasingly reliable corridor becomes more compelling.
