Egypt Launches New 90-Ton Tugboats AZM 3 and AZM 4
In line with Egypt’s strategy to localize shipbuilding and enhance its maritime capabilities, Admiral Osama Rabiee, Chairman and Managing Director of the Suez Canal Authority (SCA), has witnessed the launching of two new tugboats, AZM 3 and AZM 4. The event took place at Misr Tugboats Factory in Safaga, marking another key milestone in the modernization of the SCA fleet.
The newly launched tugboats, each with a bollard pull of 90 tons, are part of a larger program to develop ten advanced tugboats to serve the Suez Canal’s operational needs. Built under the supervision of the South Red Sea Shipyard, these vessels demonstrate Egypt’s growing expertise in shipbuilding and marine engineering.
Admiral Rabiee described the achievement as a new step in supporting Egypt’s industrial localization goals and boosting its ability to produce high-quality maritime assets. He also emphasized that the new vessels meet international standards for performance, safety, and efficiency, strengthening Egypt’s position in the regional maritime industry.
The AZM 3 and AZM 4 measure 32 meters in length, 13.5 meters in width, and 6 meters in draft. They are designed for heavy-duty towing operations and can perform effectively in both harbor and offshore conditions. These capabilities will enhance the Suez Canal Authority’s operational readiness and ensure continued excellence in navigation support services.
This launch follows the earlier completion of AZM 1 and AZM 2 and is part of a broader initiative to upgrade the canal’s support fleet. Misr Tugboats Factory is also advancing the construction of twelve modern fishing vessels as part of Egypt’s strategy to expand its shipbuilding industry beyond the canal sector.
The success of these projects reflects Egypt’s determination to strengthen its industrial base, create job opportunities, and attract international cooperation in the maritime sector. With growing demand for Egyptian-built vessels, the country is on track to become a regional leader in shipbuilding and marine services.
